Ever wondered what all those techie words and acronyms actual mean?... well you're in the right place to find out! We have an extensive list of the most common tech words used in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)

Definitive VR Dictionary

  • MR
  • Mixed reality straddles augmented and virtual reality, in placing virtual objects in the real world that you can interact with. Like its sister forms, you’ll find MR in military, medical and simulation training. However, you might also find it as part of an interactive exhibit in an art gallery.

  • AR
  • Unlike virtual reality, which completely replaces the physical world, augmented reality  overlays digital information onto the real world, through the ‘window’ of a screen. Pokémon Go is a great example of this, using a smartphone camera to reveal the pokémon wandering around your neighbourhood.

  • HMD
  • A head-mounted display is any device worn on the head with a display in front of one or both eyes. These might show CGI or live imagery. You’ll find HMDs used in the military, operating rooms and in simulation training, but the ones we’ll largely be discussing here are used in gaming.

  • UHPD
  • UHPD™, or Ultra High Pixel Density, is the next generation of high-resolution displays developed by INT. The UHPD™ platform is a proprietary glass-based red/green/blue (RGB) AMOLED display that delivers a huge increase in pixel density (> 2200ppi). By further integrating UHPD™ with light field technology, the INT UHPD™ creates a stunning and hyperrealistic viewing experience with multi-focal planes. It also greatly reduces visual fatigue from VAC (vergence-accommodation conflict). As a direct comparison, the Valve Index has a pixel density of a mere 598 ppi, whereas the UHPD™ has a 2,228 ppi display. Furthermore, the highest pixel density for commercial mobile phone AMOLEDs is 572 ppi, with a low yield when approaching over 800 ppi, whereas UHPD™ displays have four times more pixels in the unit area!

As UHPD™ advances and becomes more affordable, we may very well see VR headset manufacturers introducing this technology into their next generation headsets. Because the lenses will be ultra thin and flexible, they will have an extremely wide FOV with almost perfect clarity. God rays and screen door effects may become a thing of the past.

  • CPU
  • CPU - Referred to as the Central Processing Unit, also called a central processor or main processor and is the electronic circuitry (computer chip) within every computer. In fact, almost every major device you own. From smartphones to tablets, even many of the everday items around the home such as the vacuum cleaner, even the damn dishwasher, most will have one. The CPU is considered as the brain for electronic devices. They execute instructions that make up a computer program. The CPU performs basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output (I/O) operations specified by the instructions.
