Definitive VR Dictionary

  • UHPD
  • UHPD™, or Ultra High Pixel Density, is the next generation of high-resolution displays developed by INT. The UHPD™ platform is a proprietary glass-based red/green/blue (RGB) AMOLED display that delivers a huge increase in pixel density (> 2200ppi). By further integrating UHPD™ with light field technology, the INT UHPD™ creates a stunning and hyperrealistic viewing experience with multi-focal planes. It also greatly reduces visual fatigue from VAC (vergence-accommodation conflict). As a direct comparison, the Valve Index has a pixel density of a mere 598 ppi, whereas the UHPD™ has a 2,228 ppi display. Furthermore, the highest pixel density for commercial mobile phone AMOLEDs is 572 ppi, with a low yield when approaching over 800 ppi, whereas UHPD™ displays have four times more pixels in the unit area!

As UHPD™ advances and becomes more affordable, we may very well see VR headset manufacturers introducing this technology into their next generation headsets. Because the lenses will be ultra thin and flexible, they will have an extremely wide FOV with almost perfect clarity. God rays and screen door effects may become a thing of the past.
